Severed fiber-optic cable knocks out internet and phone services to parts of Haida Gwaii

Some residents of Haida Gwaii are without internet and phone services at the moment.

A severed fiber-optic cable between Skidegate and Tlell has taken Mascon and Citywest Customers offline in Skidegate, Sandspit and Daajing Giids.

An update from TELUS indicates connectivity issues began on Saturday, March 21st, around 1:30p.m, with Mascon and Citywest confirming the same. Mascon’s website indicated that TV and Phone services have been affected in addition to internet services.

The North Coast Regional District issued a VoyentAlert! about the outage this morning at 10:00a.m, confirming repairs crews have been dispatched, but that the repairs are not expected to be complete before tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday, March 24th.
