The Tahltan, Kaska, and Taku River Tlingit Nations have just signed a new Health Declaration that’s set to transform the health service delivery model in their respective communities.
The so-called ‘3Nations Transformational Health Declaration’ was struck by the 3Nations Society last week, along with the First Nations Health Authority, the Northern Region First Nations Health Council, Northern Health and the Ministry of Health. It builds off a Memo of Understanding to do so that was agreed upon last fall.
The new partnership will see all Parties to the Declaration work together to improve access to, and the quality of, care received in the northern jurisdictions of Atlin, Lower Post, Good Hope Lake, Dease Lake, Telegraph Creek, Iskut, and Fort Ware.
While exact details of the changes have not been shared, the Declaration includes a commitment to ensure that the worldviews, values and priorities of the Tahltan, Kaska and Taku River Tlingit First Nations are reflected within the new service model, and that it remains grounded in culturally-safe care.
The 3Nations Transformative Health Declaration was informed by research undertaken by the 3Nations Society in 2024 to pinpoint barriers-to-care as well as significant gaps within health services that existed within their communities.
