NDP leader Don Davies is raising concerns over the growing cost of groceries in Canada. He says families are expected to pay about one thousand dollars more this year for the same amount of food compared to last year.
Davies highlighted the human impact of these rising costs. One in four parents are skipping meals so their children can eat, and food bank use across the country has reached record levels.
While welcoming any government measures to help families, Davies says action is needed immediately. He criticized the federal government for not addressing the root causes, including price gouging and anti‑competitive practices in the grocery sector.
The NDP is proposing several solutions, including capping prices on essential grocery items, implementing a mandatory Grocery Code of Conduct, strengthening competition laws and penalties, establishing a National Food Cooperative Strategy, and fixing the Nutrition North program.
“Canadians deserve a food system that works for them, not one that leaves families hungry,” Davies said. “These are practical measures that will have a real impact for people.”
CFNR News will continue to follow developments and provide updates on federal plans and NDP initiatives aimed at helping families manage rising grocery costs.
