Conservative MPs Sandra Cobena of Newmarket-Aurora and Vincent Ho of Richmond Hill South are calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to address rising food costs in Canada. In a statement released on January 26th, the MPs said food inflation has doubled under Carney, making Canada the G7 country with the highest grocery prices and twice that of the United States.
Cobena and Ho point to government taxes on farmers, fertilizer, and food processors, along with high deficits, as key drivers of the problem. They highlighted that the 2026 Food Price Report estimates it will cost $17,600 to feed a family of four—up $1,000 from last year—and that a quarter of Canadian youth are skipping meals to pay other bills.
The Conservative MPs are urging the government to repeal the food packaging tax, the industrial carbon tax, and the fuel standard, arguing these measures would help Canadians get food from farm to fork more affordably. They also criticized the government’s recent rebate announcement, saying it provides only minimal relief for families at the grocery store.
Cobena and Ho stressed that Canadians deserve immediate action to make nutritious food more affordable, and said the opposition will hold the government accountable for its promises on food affordability.
