The B.C. government has approved a major expansion of the Mt. Milligan copper and gold mine, extending operations by seven years to 2035. The announcement was made today in Prince George by Premier David Eby and Minister of Mining Jagrup Brar.
The expansion is expected to support more than 500 existing jobs and potentially sustain over 1,000 jobs including indirect employment. The project includes up to 400 million dollars in new capital spending and will increase daily ore production from 60,000 to 66,500 tonnes.
Officials say the project was fast-tracked through coordinated permitting, which allowed environmental assessments, safety reviews, and consultations with First Nations to be completed more efficiently. The province says all environmental, safety, and Indigenous consultation standards remain unchanged.
“Mt. Milligan continues to play a vital role in B.C.’s mining sector,” said Centerra Gold CEO Paul Tomory. “We are pleased to continue operations responsibly, supporting families and communities in northern B.C.”
Mining has long been an important part of northern B.C.’s economy, providing thousands of family-supporting jobs across the region. The Mt. Milligan expansion is one of several priority projects the provincial government is advancing to strengthen local economies while protecting the environment.
