Three B.C.-based technology companies are testing new clean and low-emission innovations at the Port of Prince Rupert, supporting emission reductions, safer port operations, and job growth in northern communities.
Through Innovate BC’s Integrated Marketplace, Nuport Robotics, Open Ocean Robotics, and Hydra Energy are piloting dual-use technologies that support commercial port activity while also aligning with Canada’s defence and sovereignty priorities. Combined, the projects represent an investment of more than $1.7 million.
Nuport Robotics is leading a $306,000 project that installs an emissions data-collection system on a short-haul truck operating at the port. The system is designed to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions while providing data that can improve efficiency and competitiveness in port logistics.
Open Ocean Robotics is testing its zero-emission DataXplorer Gen 2 uncrewed surface vessel in a $409,000 project. The autonomous vessel will monitor marine and ocean conditions without placing workers on the water, improving safety while collecting valuable data for port users.
Hydra Energy, in partnership with the Prince Rupert Port Authority, is leading a $1-million project to deploy a hydrogen-fuelling station and test low- and zero-emission vehicles for short-haul, local, and long-haul deliveries.
The Province says the projects support B.C.’s Look West plan, which focuses on growing innovation, diversifying markets, and building a stronger, more independent economy, while positioning northern B.C. as a leader in clean transportation and advanced technology.
