AltaGas is opening new energy markets for Canada through its propane and butane terminal in Prince Rupert. The facility, launched in 2019 as the country’s first propane export terminal, now supplies significant volumes of Canadian LPG to Japan, South Korea, and China.
Before 2019, Canada exported 100 percent of its propane to the United States. Since then, AltaGas has expanded trade to Asia. New 2025 data shows the company now provides 6 percent of China’s propane imports, 14 percent of South Korea’s LPG imports, and 11 percent of Japan’s LPG imports. Shipments to China began in April 2025 and quickly gained market share, highlighting how Prince Rupert is becoming a gateway for Canadian energy to reach global markets.
AltaGas officials say the terminal’s success offers a roadmap for Canada’s energy trade and a model for other resource sectors using West Coast infrastructure. Demand for propane and butane in Asia is expected to grow 40 to 50 percent by 2040. Local leaders say the terminal supports Northern B.C. jobs and strengthens the province’s role in international trade.
The Prince Rupert terminal demonstrates how West Coast energy infrastructure can connect Northern B.C. to growing global markets while diversifying Canada’s trade partners beyond the United States.
