Prime Minister Mark Carney will be in Prince Rupert today for a meeting with the Coastal First Nations – Great Bear Initiative.
The theme of the day is expected to be the role of Indigenous communities in the push to strengthen the Canadian economy in response to economic threats from the United States, in line with Ottawa’s major projects agenda, with government sources telling the Canadian Press that marine conservation may be part of the talks.
The Coastal First Nations themselves have stated that they remain opposed to oil tankers transiting the north coast, that their position on upholding the tanker ban has not changed, and that they intend to make this clear to the Prime Minister.
Others opposed to a potential pipeline, in light of Alberta’s strong advocacy for one, have since told CFNR News that there will be a demonstration organized in protest while Carney’s visit is underway. Their stated intention is to take a strong stance in support of the exist oil tanker moratorium, and to let the Prime Minister know that passionate opposition to the development of future pipelines exists in the Northwest.
Today’s meetings are reported to be underway at Chances Casino from 9:00am to 11:00am today, Tuesday, January 13th, with demonstrators organizing via social media planning to gather peacefully outside while the event is underway.
