Christopher McKnight, elected Chief Councillor of the Kitasoo Xai Xais Nation, says the Nation’s leadership including Hereditary Chiefs and elected council recently met with the Prime Minister of Canada to discuss key priorities such as Rights and Title, sustainable economic development, policing, wellness, and housing.
McKnight says during the meeting, leaders reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Kitasoo Xai Xais lands, waters, and way of life. They also clearly stated their strong opposition to any proposed transport of bitumen or crude oil through their territory, and confirmed continued support for the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act.
He says the leadership emphasized that transporting persistent oil poses serious and lasting risks to the marine environment and to future generations.
McKnight adds the Nation remains united in upholding its laws and values, and thanks supporters for standing with the Kitasoo Xai Xais Nation in protecting their territory.
