The BC Highway Patrol reports a mixed picture from the 2025 Winter Impaired Driving Campaign. While Central BC saw a decline in impaired driving, Northern BC recorded an increase, raising concerns for highway safety in the region.
In December 2025, 240 drivers were prohibited from driving due to alcohol or drug impairment, compared to 267 in December 2024. Northern BC, covering communities north of 100 Mile House, had 64 prohibitions—up 12 from the previous year. Central BC saw 50 prohibitions, a decrease of 31. Other regions, including the Kootenays, Vancouver Island, and the South Coast, showed smaller changes.
Inspector Adam Tallboy says weather conditions and staffing can influence year-to-year numbers, but Northern BC’s increase is noteworthy. “Drivers in Northern BC need to remain vigilant. Mandatory Alcohol Screening remains a crucial tool, allowing officers to demand a breath test from any motorist,” he said.
The annual Winter Impaired Driving Campaign, led by the BC Association of Chiefs of Police, uses extra check stops, patrols, and enhanced enforcement to keep roads safe. Officials remind the public that impaired driving endangers everyone and that those caught will be removed from BC highways.
