Heavy rainfall yesterday caused a washout near Jungle Beach, cutting off travel between Tlell and Skidegate. At this time, there is no detour available. The Ministry of Transportation confirms crews are on site and assessments are ongoing, with hourly updates being posted to DriveBC.
The Council of the Haida Nation has activated its Emergency Operations Centre in Skidegate and is coordinating accommodations for travelers stranded on both sides of the washout. Residents and travelers are being urged not to attempt backroad routes, as those roads have also become unsafe due to flooding and runoff.
Those needing shelter north of the washout are asked to contact Teri Kish at 250-626-7293. Travelers to the south can check in at Sk’aadgaa Naay Elementary School. The Village of Port Clements is also offering assistance and asks affected travelers to contact the village office by email at office@portclements.ca or by phone at 250-557-4295.
