Today marks seven years since Cynthia Martin, a member of the Gitxsan Nation, was last seen in New Hazelton.
Martin was 50 years old when she disappeared on the night of December 23, 2018, after leaving her mother’s home. She was reported missing the following day when family members were unable to reach her and became concerned for her safety.
Search efforts began immediately, and her vehicle was later found abandoned and locked near the Hagwilget Bridge along Highway 16. Police said at the time there were no signs of a struggle and all of her personal belongings were still inside the vehicle. Despite extensive searches by police, volunteers, and family members, no trace of Martin was found in the years that followed.
In August 2022, RCMP confirmed that human remains discovered earlier that year had been positively identified as Cynthia Martin. Police said the investigation into her death remains active, and the BC Coroners Service continues its own investigation.
Martin had previously worked as a youth worker in Vancouver before returning to New Hazelton to be closer to her family.
On this anniversary, police continue to ask anyone with information related to the case to contact the New Hazelton RCMP.
