British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office is investigating a fatal police interaction in Prince Rupert this past Friday, December 19th.
The Prince Rupert RCMP had confirmed that some of their officers had been called to a report of an alleged assault at a residence in the 500 block of Pillsbury Avenue just after 2:20 pm this past Friday afternoon. While attempting to take a man suspected to be involved into custody, a struggle ensued, and a conducted energy weapon was used on him by responding officers.
According to details received by the IIO, after this point and while officers were securing the suspect, he became unconscious. Immediate life saving efforts were attempted, paramedics were called to the scene, and the man was taken to hospital but he had later passed away.
Because a death had occurred during police contact, the Independent Investigations Office of BC has now taken over. The Prince Rupert RCMP say no further details will be released while the investigation is underway, but add that nobody else was injured.
The IIO will now seek to determine the facts of what took place, and if the use of force by the office was justified and conducted in accordance with police policy.
