Environment Canada has issued the first Arctic outflow warning of the season is now in effect for the North Coast’s inland areas, including Terrace and Kitimat.
The warning runs from now through Wednesday morning. An Arctic air mass combined with strong northeasterly outflow winds is driving wind chill values down to near minus 20.
Actual air temperatures will range from minus 9 to minus 11, but wind gusts up to 60 kilometers an hour will make it feel much colder and increase the risk of cold-related impacts.
Conditions are expected to slowly improve Tuesday morning as wind chill values rise.
Frostbite and hypothermia can develop within minutes if proper precautions aren’t taken. Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, ensure pets and livestock have adequate shelter, and be prepared for unusually cold and windy conditions.
