Smithers RCMP are investigating an impaired driving collision that occurred earlier this month on Highway 16.
Police say the crash happened on December 11th at approximately 1:00 a.m. and involved a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck. The occupants of the vehicle were transported to Bulkley Valley District Hospital, where a passenger received treatment for injuries. The driver of the vehicle is currently under investigation for impaired driving causing bodily harm. The investigation remains ongoing.
The collision comes shortly after RCMP across Northern British Columbia participated in a coordinated impaired driving enforcement effort. On December 6th, officers conducted check stops throughout the region as part of the annual Light Up the Province campaign, stopping approximately 400 vehicles. The initiative is part of a province-wide holiday road safety effort aimed at reducing impaired driving and preventing serious injuries and fatalities.
Despite increased enforcement and public awareness campaigns, police say impaired driving continues to be a significant issue. Smithers RCMP report issuing two additional 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions last weekend as holiday gatherings increase in the community.
Police remind motorists that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatal collisions in British Columbia. Enforcement will continue throughout the holiday season, and drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, arrange designated drivers, or use alternative transportation to ensure everyone gets home safely.
