Environment Canada has issued a yellow snowfall warning for Atlin, with snow continuing through late this morning. Total snowfall accumulations of 15 to 20 centimetres are expected, with locally higher amounts possible in nearby mountainous areas.
The snowfall is being caused by a frontal system spreading snow across the southern Yukon and northern British Columbia. In addition to heavy snow at times, gusty northerly winds may lead to reduced visibility due to blowing and drifting snow.
Travel conditions are expected to be difficult. Roads and walkways may become snow-covered and slippery, and visibility may be reduced at times. Residents are advised to allow extra travel time and use caution when driving or walking.
The snowfall warning also includes nearby regions such as Watson Lake, Whitehorse, Teslin, Haines Junction, and the Cassiar Mountains. Environment Canada notes forecast confidence is high.
Meanwhile, additional weather alerts remain in effect across northern B.C. Fort Nelson and the Peace River region are under a snowfall warning, with another round of heavy snow expected through this afternoon and totals reaching up to 20 centimetres near the Rockies.
A winter storm warning is also in place for Highway 97 through Pine Pass, where drivers may encounter patchy freezing rain changing to heavy snow, creating hazardous travel conditions.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring Environment Canada forecasts and DriveBC for road conditions.
