An Arctic high pressure system is currently hanging over the Yukon and Northern BC, causing temperatures to plummet and keeping them dangerously low this week.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued extreme cold warnings for large portions of Northern BC along the Yukon Border, including the Alaska Highway and Fort Nelson area.
Those in Atlin, along the Cassiar Mountains and along the BC portion of the Alaska highway, including Muncho Lake and Stone Mountain Parks as well as in the Fort Nelson region, have been experiencing baseline temperatures below -35 degrees Celsius, with wind chill making that feel like -45 at times for much of this week.
Across the border in the Yukon, temperatures have been even colder, with most populated regions aside from Old Crow and those on the Dempster highway experiencing wind chill values below -50 degrees Celsius at times. The prolonged extreme cold had prompted the Yukon Government to urge residents in Whitehorse to reduce their power consumption today to reduce the strain on an electrical grid struggling to keep up with heating demands.
The cold front is also affecting northern parts of Alberta, and sections of the Northwest Territories.
Cold weather will persist until the arctic high dissipates tomorrow morning.
