With winter weather in full force, the Fort St. John RCMP is urging the public to stay prepared for cold temperatures and snow. Police Service Dog Mako, along with his handler, is ready for the challenges posed by the weather, and he has some important advice for drivers.
The Fort St. John area has already seen significant snowfall, and more is expected, along with colder temperatures. The RCMP has been handling an increase in collisions, largely due to hazardous road conditions. Mako reminds drivers that vehicles are required by law to be equipped with winter tires from October 1st to April 30th to improve safety on icy and snow-covered roads. Additionally, it’s recommended to carry an emergency kit, including extra clothing, food, water, and essential items like a shovel and tow strap in case of an emergency or “off-road experience.”
The RCMP is also urging the public to slow down and drive carefully according to the weather conditions. If travel is not necessary, it’s safer to stay at home and avoid the roads altogether. As always, dressing appropriately for the weather and ensuring your vehicle is prepared can help prevent incidents. The Fort St. John RCMP and PSD Mako want everyone to stay safe, warm, and prepared this winter.
