The Smithers RCMP, together with Northern Society for Domestic Peace’s Sexual Assault Services, is marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed nationwide from November 25 to December 10. The campaign aims to highlight the ongoing impacts of intimate partner violence and the increased risks that can surface during the holiday season.
Intimate partner violence—whether physical, sexual, emotional, or tied to coercive control—remains a significant criminal and public-health concern. Smithers RCMP responds to about 125 IPV calls each year. While violence can occur at any time, the holidays can intensify risk due to added stress, alcohol use, and changes in household routines.
Local support workers emphasize the importance of consent, which must be sober, voluntary, and clearly communicated. They also encourage residents to trust their instincts when they witness concerning behaviour. Simple actions—such as checking in, offering a safe exit, or contacting police—can help reduce harm.
For anyone affected by sexual assault, Sexual Assault Services at NSDP provides confidential, trauma-informed assistance. Supports include crisis counselling, help with legal processes, accompaniment to hospital or police, third-party reporting, and safety planning. Individuals can seek help at any time, whether or not they choose to make a report.
