Kitselas Chief Councillor Glenn Bennet has been busy in recent days, meeting with key players involved in the development of the North Coast Transmission Line as well as with conservative MPs on regional issues alongside Mayor of Terrace, Sean Bujtas.
In a Facebook post on the morning of Thursday, November 27th, Bennett indicated he was meeting with a team from BC Hydro for talks on the NCTL. He reiterated that Kitselas First Nation has yet to sign off on the term sheet for the project, and that Kitselas First Nation’s concerns focus around how the project will impact their Treaty Settlement lands.
On the day it was announced that the North Coast Transmission line would be referred to the Major Projects Office for fast-tracking, Bennett had this to say:
“With it impacts our territory, they’ve calculated it right down to the kilometer. 79 kilometers of my terriory is going to be impacted by this project, and so obviously we have concerns, and we hope that the province and bc hydro are prepared to addresses Kitselas’ concerns.’ – Kitselas Chief Councillor Glenn Bennet on North Coast Transmission Line
Also this week, Chief Councillor Bennett had taken part in a joint meeting with Federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, Conservative MP for Skeena Bulkley-Valley, Ellis Ross and Mayor of Terrace, Sean Bujtas.
Via Facebook, Poilievre shared a photo of the trio posing for a photo op with a carved ceremonial alder spoon, gifted to Poilievre by Chief Councilor Bennett during the meeting.
Poilievre had captioned the photo with note claiming “we’ll work together to clear Ottawa out of the way so their community can build more, unblock resources, and make life affordable again’. While MP Ross had shared the photo praising the pairs continued efforts to advance Northwestern BC issues in Ottawa.
The exact details of what was discussed at this meeting has not been shared publicly, but CFNR News has reached out to Kitselas First Nation and the City of Terrace for more details.
