Drax has confirmed it will cease operations at its pellet plant in Williams Lake, B.C., by the end of 2025, citing a significant decline in available fibre supply. The company says ongoing sawmill closures, curtailments, and the loss of a major local fibre contract have made it impossible to sustain operations at the facility.
An orderly wind-down is now underway and will continue until the remaining fibre on site is fully processed. Drax expects this to conclude before the new year. The Williams Lake plant employs about 30 people, all of whom will be directly impacted.
To support affected staff, the company is offering severance packages, wellbeing resources, and the opportunity to apply for vacancies at other Drax operations. Drax leadership says the decision was not taken lightly and acknowledges the strain the closure may place on employees, their families, and the surrounding community.
The company plans to maintain communication with workers, local officials, and community partners throughout the transition. Drax also expressed gratitude for the dedication shown by its Williams Lake team over the years and says it will help employees pursue new opportunities wherever possible.
