Last Friday, the Province of British Columbia announced a historic $241 million investment to expand skilled-trades training, doubling funding over the next three years. The move is aimed at giving more British Columbians access to high-demand, well-paying jobs, particularly in construction, electrical, welding, and other trades, while supporting major projects across the province.
For Northern and rural communities, the investment is a game-changer. Students can train locally, participate in apprenticeship programs with area employers, and earn the hours required for Red Seal certification without having to leave their homes. Laurie Waye, President and CEO of Coast Mountain College, says the funding will allow the college to increase per-student support, reduce waitlists, and expand trades programs in Terrace, Hazelton, and surrounding areas.
The funding also addresses labor shortages in industrial trades while strengthening the local workforce and economy. By keeping students in Northern B.C., communities benefit not just from skilled workers, but from residents who remain active in their local schools, organizations, and businesses. Coast Mountain College is ready to support the next generation of tradespeople, offering more programs, new certifications, and local apprenticeship opportunities.
This historic investment ensures that Northern students have access to sustainable, long-term training, helping both individuals and communities thrive while filling essential roles in the region’s growing industries.
