The federal government is investing in northern BC to support safer and more accessible active transportation. Williams Lake First Nation and the Nisga’a Villages of Gitlaxt’aamiks and Gingolx are receiving funding through the Active Transportation Fund to plan and develop walking, cycling, and other human-powered transportation routes.
Williams Lake First Nation is creating a phased plan for new walking and biking trails, along with educational resources to promote active travel and healthy lifestyles. The initiative is designed to connect community members safely to schools, workplaces, and community facilities.
Meanwhile, the Nisga’a Villages of Gitlaxt’aamiks and Gingolx are completing active transportation plans to identify gaps in current infrastructure and assess opportunities for future construction projects. These plans will help guide the development of sidewalks, trails, and other active transportation improvements that benefit all residents.
The Active Transportation Fund supports Indigenous communities across Canada, emphasizing equitable access and sustainable, community-focused transportation solutions. By investing in planning and infrastructure, the federal government is helping northern BC communities improve safety, connectivity, and access to greener, healthier transportation options. Residents can expect stronger, more connected networks for walking, cycling, and other forms of active travel in the coming years.
