A test of the BC Emergency Alert system will take place today, Wednesday, November 19, at 1:55 p.m. Pacific Time. The alert will be broadcast on mobile phones, televisions, and radio stations throughout the province. The test message will clearly state that it is only a test, but the sound may still be loud and attention-grabbing—just as it would be during a real emergency.
Emergency officials conduct these tests to ensure the alerting system works properly during events such as wildfires, floods, earthquakes, and other life-threatening situations. A reliable system is considered essential for delivering urgent public safety information to people across B.C.
Residents are urged not to call 9-1-1 when the alert goes out. Emergency call-takers must remain available for people experiencing real emergencies, and any non-urgent calls could delay critical assistance.
Following the test, British Columbians will be invited to take part in an online survey to share whether they received the alert on their devices and how it appeared. The results will help the province assess the reach and performance of the system.
The test is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness and ensure communities are better protected when disaster strikes.
