Northern Health is advising residents of Masset, Old Masset, Tow Hill, and Port Clements that the Emergency Department at Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital will be temporarily unavailable from 3:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, November 18, until 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 19, due to staffing challenges. Northern Health is actively working to fill vacant shifts and may resume services sooner if possible.
During this closure, patients requiring urgent or emergency care will be redirected to Haida Gwaii Hospital and Health Centre in Daajing Giids. Residents experiencing life-threatening emergencies such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or severe bleeding should call BC Emergency Health Services at 1-800-461-9911 for assessment and transport.
For non-urgent medical needs, patients without a primary care provider can access the Northern Health Virtual Primary & Community Care Clinic at 1-844-645-7811, available daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Indigenous patients and their family members can also use the First Nations Virtual Doctor of the Day program by calling 1-855-344-3800. Residents may also book appointments with pharmacists for minor ailments or prescription contraceptives through the provincial online portal.
Northern Health appreciates the patience and support of the community as it works to ensure safe, timely care for all residents of Haida Gwaii.
