Fort Nelson is preparing for a major Indigenous-led housing redevelopment that will bring 45 new affordable homes to the community. The Fort Nelson Aboriginal Friendship Society will lead the project, replacing aging housing with modern units designed to reflect Indigenous culture, values, and community priorities. Demolition of existing structures is scheduled to begin in January 2026, with construction planned for the spring.
The redevelopment is part of a series of projects made possible by a one-time provincial investment to the Aboriginal Housing Management Association. This funding empowers Indigenous organizations to lead housing initiatives, ensuring developments are culturally grounded and tailored to the needs of the community. Across British Columbia, similar projects are underway, including renovations, new constructions, and home acquisitions led by Indigenous housing organizations.
Officials highlight that these projects are about more than just building homes. They are creating spaces where families can connect, culture can flourish, and communities can thrive. By supporting Indigenous-led solutions, the province is investing in both housing and self-determination, giving local communities the tools to guide how homes are built, maintained, and cared for. For Fort Nelson, this redevelopment represents a step forward in strengthening both housing options and cultural connection for generations to come.
