Northern Health has unveiled its Climate Change and Sustainability Roadmap, a comprehensive five-year strategy guiding the health authority’s climate action from 2025 to 2030. The Roadmap outlines 18 key actions across four focus areas: strengthening governance, reducing emissions, enhancing climate preparedness, and empowering community-led solutions.
The strategy envisions a climate-resilient North where health services are delivered in harmony with the land and in partnership with Indigenous peoples, local communities, and organizations. While Northern Health has been engaged in sustainability and climate work for years, the Roadmap provides a clear direction, better coordination, and strengthened efforts across the region.
The plan emphasizes that everyone in the North has a role to play, from health professionals and staff protecting communities from climate-related health risks, to cross-sector partnerships that support larger-scale action. Operational priorities include sustainable food services, procurement, waste management, water conservation, and transportation.
The Roadmap also focuses on preparing communities for climate-related emergencies such as heatwaves, wildfires, and droughts. By prioritizing vulnerable populations—including seniors, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions—Northern Health aims to promote health equity while building community resilience.
The Roadmap reflects Northern Health’s commitment to creating a healthier, more sustainable North for all.
