An arrest at a Halloween fundraiser in Terrace has raised serious concerns after a violent confrontation with RCMP officers. According to the Terrace RCMP, on November 1st at 1:30 a.m., officers were on patrol near the Best Western on Greig Avenue when a hotel employee flagged them down for help. The employee reported an intoxicated woman who was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the hotel. After arresting the woman, a second woman allegedly became confrontational with police, resulting in her arrest. As tensions escalated, additional patrons interfered with officers, leading to more arrests.
Disturbing video footage of the incident shows an elderly Indigenous woman being dragged across the ground while being handcuffed, fueling accusations of excessive force and racial profiling. The RCMP claims they called for backup as the situation became more chaotic. One officer suffered minor injuries, and one woman was treated by paramedics for shoulder pain.
Witnesses to the incident have confirmed that they’ve already filed a complaint with the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission, calling for an investigation into the officers’ actions. No formal charges have been filed yet, but the RCMP is preparing a report to send to Crown Counsel for review.
