A Coastal Flooding Warning has been issued for the eastern coastline of Haida Gwaii, extending from Rose Spit to Cumshewa Island. The warning comes in response to elevated ocean water levels, expected to be significantly higher than usual. A strong storm surge is anticipated to coincide with high tide, potentially raising water levels by up to 50 centimeters above the highest astronomical tide. This will occur twice, first on Wednesday from 10 AM to 2 PM, and again on Thursday from 11 AM to 3 PM. Along with the surge, strong southeast winds are expected, increasing the risk of flooding.
Residents in the affected area are advised to be cautious, as roads and walkways may be obstructed by debris such as driftwood and rocks. Coastal erosion is also likely, particularly in sensitive areas like tidal flats, estuaries, and barrier islands. Local authorities are urging everyone to stay informed by monitoring weather alerts and forecasts.
This weather event is part of a series of frontal systems moving across the BC coast.
