The Government of British Columbia has appointed two new judges to the Provincial Court, effective November 24th, reinforcing access to justice across the province. While Diba Majzub will serve in Port Coquitlam, much of the spotlight is on Smithers, where Megan Olson will bring both legal expertise and strong community ties.
Olson was called to the B.C. bar in 2008 and has practiced criminal defence law and Indigenous law. She became an accredited family mediator in 2017 and currently serves as managing lawyer at the Parents Legal Centre in Smithers. Beyond her legal work, Olson has long-standing connections with the Gitxsan First Nation and the broader Smithers community, collaborating closely on local initiatives and supporting families and children in the region.
Her appointment reflects the government’s commitment to having judges who understand the communities they serve. With her knowledge of local legal issues and her dedication to community engagement, Olson is expected to strengthen access to justice in Smithers and surrounding areas.
These appointments are made after a multi-step process involving the Judicial Council of B.C., which reviews applicants and recommends candidates to the Attorney General. Both new judges will ensure courts have the judicial resources needed to meet the needs of British Columbians.
