The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for the Kitimat River, Kemano River, and Kingcome River areas as another Pacific storm moves toward the North Coast.
Forecasters say an atmospheric river will arrive overnight Thursday into Friday, bringing periods of heavy rain and mild temperatures. The system could raise freezing levels and trigger snowmelt, increasing runoff into local rivers. Although rainfall totals are not unusually high for this time of year, a series of recent storms has kept the region saturated, leaving rivers more responsive to new rainfall.
River levels are expected to rise quickly on Friday. While major flooding is not expected, residents should be prepared for potential localized flooding, erosion, and landslide risks. The public is urged to stay well back from fast-moving rivers, unstable banks, and flooded roadways.
The River Forecast Centre continues to monitor the situation and will issue updates as conditions change. For tips on flood preparedness, visit PreparedBC.
