A Flood Warning is now in effect for the Skeena region effective for all rivers around Terrace, including all tributaries of the Skeena River, as well as the Kitimat River and the Kemano River and their tributaries. The Province had upgraded the Flood Watch issued Wednesday afternoon to a warning at 3:45pm Thursday afternoon.
River levels in all regions have been rising rapidly in response to this week’s heavy rain, but some smaller tributaries around the North Coast were found to have already peaked.
The BC River Forecast Centre says there are no specific flooding concerns for the Skeena River or Kitsumkalum River, as both rivers were considered to be below ‘a 1-year return period flow’, however, with weather stations south of Terrace recording upwards of 100mm of rain during the deluge, the River Forecast Centre says smaller streams in the area which are not monitored may have higher flows within them.
The Kitimat river was considered to have a 2-year period flow as of 2:00pm yesterday. Its water level was found to be rising rapidly, as were the water levels of it’s major tributaries.
The Terrace RCMP has confirmed they received no reports of flooding concerns so far, although the City of Terrace had shut down some trails and roads yesterday afternoon due to pooling water from the rain. Officials with the BC River Forecast Centre have advised the public to avoid the edges of rivers and steams until the high water levels subside.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for the North and Central Coasts, including the Nass River, all other rivers and tributaries around New Aiyansh, as well as those around Prince Rupert, and the Kingcome and Wannock Rivers. A Flood Watch is also in effect for North Vancouver Island. On the Island, a landslide had been reported near Winter Harbor.
High Streamflow Advisories remain in effect for the South and Sunshine Coasts, as well as Howe Sound, the Sea-to-Sky region and surrounding areas, the Lillooet River and it’s tributaries, coastal parts of the lower mainland, as well as the Western, Eastern, and southern parts of Vancouver Island.
