Stephen Buffalo, President and CEO of the Indian Resource Council of Canada, spoke at the Nation2Nation event in Kitimat today about the growing opportunities for Indigenous communities through collaboration, energy development, and cultural unity.
A proud member of the Samson Cree Nation, Buffalo emphasized the importance of building strong relationships with industry partners, supporting younger generations, and ensuring Indigenous participation in decision-making.
He highlighted the potential of natural resource projects—including oil, gas, and renewable energy—to create lasting economic opportunities for First Nations communities.
Buffalo also spoke about the challenges of bureaucracy, historical inequities, and social impacts, stressing the need for cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and mentorship.
Reflecting on his own journey from his community to leading national initiatives, Buffalo underscored the role of ceremony, tradition, and collaboration in building stronger, self-sufficient communities.
He called for continued partnerships and unity, noting that today’s efforts in Kitimat and across Canada will lay the foundation for a brighter future for Indigenous peoples.
