Members of the Haisla nation have raised concerns about overcrowding on school bus serving their community
Parents and guardians, like Nina Shaw, say bus route Route 40 has been at it’s full capacity in recent weeks, resulting in some children getting left behind at their bus stops in the morning.
“It was dishearten to hear that some of the kids had to get off at the last stop on Wathl Creek street and got driven in from there families to town to school in town that’s not right.” – Nina Shaw
Annette Sorensen, Director of Education and Training with Haisla Nation, said they’re advocating to extend the bus driver’s hours to help ease the problem.
Shaw says what ever the solution is she just wants those in power to make a decision that suits the needs of the kids and the community.
“Just hoping that both parties will come to something that even we as parents grandparents family are going to be ok with not just what they think is going to be the best because as family and as a community we always stick together when it comes to our children and all we want is for them to be safe.” – Nina Shaw
CFNR News reached out to School District 82 for comment but has not yet received a response.
In the time since, a second bus has been assigned to route 37, serving two bus stops in Kitimat village, in an attempt to cope with the overflow
