A groundbreaking equity deal between 38 First Nations and Enbridge will be at the centre of a national panel discussion this Wednesday, October 22. Hosted by Canadian Club Toronto, The Path Forward: Indigenous Participation and Project Development in Canada will be available to watch online starting at 9:40 a.m. Pacific.
This $736-million transaction gave 38 Indigenous communities a minority stake in Enbridge’s Westcoast natural gas pipeline system—the largest Indigenous equity partnership in Canadian history. A key element was the Government of Canada’s $400-million loan guarantee, the first of its kind for Indigenous participation in an operating natural gas pipeline.
The panel will discuss the behind-the-scenes process that brought the partnership to life, as well as lessons that could shape future deals and advance Indigenous economic reconciliation across the country.
Moderated by Cherie Brant of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, the panel features:
-
Cynthia Hansen, Executive Vice President at Enbridge
-
Justin Napoleon, Board Director, Stonelasec8 Indigenous Alliance
-
Elizabeth Wademan, President and CEO, Canada Development Investment Corporation
The discussion will explore how collaborative, equity-based models can help Indigenous communities secure a stake in Canada’s energy future while supporting long-term prosperity and reconciliation.
This virtual event is free to attend, and registration is open online.
