Coast Mountain College is undergoing significant restructuring to address a $4 million annual budget shortfall caused by decreased international student revenue. As part of these changes, the college will permanently close its Hazelton campus on June 30, 2026. The decision allows the college to concentrate resources on three main campuses located in Prince Rupert, Terrace, and Smithers.
International recruitment efforts will end, with the college redirecting its focus to support local and domestic students. This shift reflects a broader strategy to build a sustainable foundation for the future. The college plans to reduce its workforce by about 20 percent, combining and eliminating some roles while creating new positions aimed at increasing efficiency and responding to student needs. Notably, the role of Dean of University Credit has been removed, replaced by a new Dean of Health to support expanding health-related programs.
Although the Hazelton campus will close, the college will continue to offer courses in the region through community partnerships and a mobile training unit to maintain educational access. Despite a decline in overall student numbers, domestic enrolment is rising, and the college remains committed to providing quality programs and services that meet regional demands.
Coast Mountain College expects to finalize and share more details about the restructuring early next year.
