Lax Kw’alaams Band members will soon have access to nearly 60 new affordable homes through two major housing developments—one opening this fall and another breaking ground in Prince Rupert.
In the boat-access-only, on-reserve village near Prince Rupert, 20 rental homes are set to open this fall for First Nation families and Elders. The development, led by the Lax Kw’alaams Band and managed by the Lax Kw’alaams WAAP Housing Society, includes four buildings: two three-bedroom four-plexes and two three-bedroom six-plexes. Families are expected to move in starting November 2025.
Meanwhile, a second housing project in Prince Rupert is beginning construction this month at 836 3rd Avenue West. When completed in fall 2027, the building will offer 38 affordable rental homes for families, individuals living with disabilities, and Elders living with caregiving family members.
Mayor Garry Reece says the two developments are the result of collaboration with BC Housing and support from the community. The goal is to meet the housing needs of Band members both on reserve and in Prince Rupert.
These projects are part of a $19-billion investment by the B.C. government. Since 2017, the province has delivered or started construction on more than 93,600 homes, including approximately 550 in the North Coast region.
