Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Shadow Minister for Industry Raquel Dancho are accusing Mark Carney of failing to protect Canadian auto jobs, following news that Stellantis will move Jeep production from Brampton, Ontario, to Illinois, putting over 3,000 workers out of work.
In a joint statement, the Conservative MPs slammed Carney for not delivering on his promise to secure a deal with the United States by July 21st, 2025. They argue that billions of taxpayer dollars were given to Stellantis to build an EV battery plant in Ontario, yet no job protections were secured for workers elsewhere in the sector.
The statement also highlights job losses at GM Oshawa, CAMI in Ingersoll, and previous layoffs at Stellantis, while U.S. investments grow. Poilievre and Dancho pointed to recent announcements, including rising U.S. tariffs on Canadian autos and lumber, as evidence of a deteriorating trade relationship under Carney’s leadership.
The Conservatives say Canadian workers are now facing tough financial decisions—from paying mortgages to skipping kids’ hockey registration—due to what they call Liberal mismanagement of key industries.
They are calling on Carney and the federal government to urgently renegotiate trade protections and deliver results for Canadian workers in auto, steel, lumber, and agriculture.
