Young people in British Columbia who are struggling to find work will have more support, thanks to new provincial and federal funding for a successful employment training program.
The YWCA’s NextStep program is receiving $2.4 million over three years to expand its services, helping youth—especially those on income assistance—gain job skills, life training, and valuable work experience.
NextStep runs as a 12-week program, providing trauma-informed, group-based training. It includes classroom workshops, volunteer and community placements, and one-on-one career coaching. Participants also receive financial incentives and can earn key certifications like FoodSafe Level 1, Emergency First Aid, and Serving It Right—qualifications that improve their chances of landing a job.
The program operates in person in Prince George and Port Coquitlam, and is also available virtually to youth across the province.
This investment is funded through Employment Insurance contributions via the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement. It reflects the province’s ongoing efforts to support youth as they transition into the workforce.
