BC Transit is preparing to roll out contactless payment options for riders as part of an upgrade to its Umo fare payment system. In the coming months, passengers will be able to tap a debit card, credit card, or mobile wallet to pay fares on fixed-route buses across the province.
To support this new feature, BC Transit will update the Umo system. As a result, any credit card information currently saved in Umo accounts will be removed over the next few weeks. Riders who have stored card details for quicker purchases, automatic payments, or linked accounts will need to re-enter their card information after the update. Those who purchase fares in person or have not saved their card details will not be affected.
During system testing, riders are asked to only use their Umo card or app QR code to avoid accidental charges from a contactless payment card or device. If this happens, an automatic refund will be issued.
BC Transit says the goal is to offer more flexible, easy-to-use payment options and apologizes for any temporary inconvenience. No official launch date has been announced, but full implementation is expected soon.
