Unregulated drug deaths in Northern British Columbia remain at dangerously high levels, though recent data from the BC Coroners Service indicates a slight decline in 2025 compared to the peak year of 2023. The Northern Health region recorded 211 deaths in 2023, but the number has dropped to an annualized total of 91 so far this year. While this decrease may offer some hope, it is important to recognize that these figures are still significantly elevated compared to earlier years.
Certain communities, including Terrace, continue to experience some of the highest overdose death rates in the province, with rates exceeding 100 deaths per 100,000 people in recent years. Fentanyl remains the primary drug detected in over 80 percent of these deaths, often in combination with stimulants such as methamphetamine or cocaine.
Public health officials caution that the 2025 data covers only the first eight months of the year and may change as more information becomes available. The ongoing prevalence of a toxic and unpredictable drug supply underscores the urgent need for enhanced overdose prevention services, access to safe supply, and comprehensive mental health supports throughout Northern BC.
