Smithers RCMP are reporting a noticeable drop in both shoplifting and property crime calls for service during the first nine months of 2025.
Preliminary data shows a significant decline in shoplifting complaints. From January to September this year, shoplifting accounted for just 12 percent of calls over the past four years—down sharply from 45 percent in 2024. That marks a 33 percent year-over-year decrease.
Offences against property have also gone down. So far this year, these calls represent 17 percent of the total from the past four years, compared to 28 percent in 2024—a reduction of 11 percent.
Acting Staff Sergeant Ryan Law attributes the positive trend to increased officer visibility and quicker connections between vulnerable individuals and support services. “We’ve been more visible in the community,” said A/Sgt. Law. “At the same time, we’re making quicker connections between individuals in crisis and health and social services, which has helped reduce repeat calls.”
RCMP say this proactive approach has eased pressure on local businesses and residents. They also emphasize that strong partnerships with local health and social agencies remain key to maintaining this momentum.
The 2025 figures are preliminary and will be finalized at year’s end.
