Fire departments across Northern B.C. recently took part in specialized emergency response training to prepare for incidents involving hazardous rail materials.
The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) training was delivered by AltaGas, in partnership with Pembina and CN, with sessions held in Terrace and Burns Lake. The program, which has run annually since 2019, aims to improve emergency preparedness along CN’s Northern B.C. rail corridor.
The two-day sessions included classroom learning facilitated by Ambipar Emergency Response, followed by live-fire exercises using LPG training props. Firefighters learned how to recognize and respond to flammable material incidents involving rail cars—situations that require rapid, informed, and coordinated action.
Departments from Terrace, Thornhill, Kitimat, Kitsumkalum, Burns Lake, Fraser Lake, Fort St. James, Houston, and South Side participated in the training.
AltaGas says the initiative highlights the importance of industry working closely with first responders to enhance public safety and emergency readiness in remote and rural communities.
