A fatal fire at a gold mining camp about 100 kilometers south of Dawson City, Yukon this past Friday, October 3rd, had claimed the lives of two young BC residents, with five other workers medevaced to hospital with injuries, three of whom were also residents of BC.
The Yukon Coroner’s Service confirmed this week that the fire broke out at the Brewer Creek gold mine camp in the early morning hours of Friday, October 3rd. The remote mine camp is accessible only by helicopter or by boat, and was in the process of closing down for the season. What caused the fire has not yet been determined, but the Coroner’s Service said suspicious causes have already been ruled out.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, but the Yukon Coroner confirmed they were both seasonal workers from BC, and both were in their early 20s.
Three of the five injured also have ties to British Columbia, with the Yukon RCMP confirming two are in their 20s, and another in their 60s.
Further details, including what part of BC they hail from have not been released.
An investigation is currently underway involving the Whitehorse Fire Marshal’s Office, the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Board, and the Dawson City RCMP.
We’ll have more details as they become available.
