Walmart has officially announced it will not reopen its Prince Rupert store, making the temporary closure that began on July 30 permanent.
In a statement to CFNR News, the company said the store was initially closed due to safety concerns. However, during the prolonged closure, a full review of the location and Walmart’s long-term plans was conducted. As a result, the company has decided to shut the store down for good.
The news comes as a major blow to the community. The Prince Rupert location was not only the city’s only major department store, but also the anchor tenant of Rupert Square Mall. Its absence has already caused challenges for families during the back-to-school season, and concerns are now growing ahead of Thanksgiving, particularly for those without access to transportation.
Walmart says its top priority is now supporting local employees impacted by the closure, though no specifics have been provided.
The company expressed gratitude to Prince Rupert residents for their support over the years but did not say whether there are future plans for a return.
This closure leaves a significant gap in local retail options and raises questions about the future of the mall and downtown shopping access.
