Nisga’a Lisims Government has been recognized for its innovative climate leadership, winning one of seven 2025 Climate & Energy Action Awards announced at the Union of BC Municipalities convention in Victoria.
Judges commended the Nation for addressing climate mitigation and adaptation while keeping community well-being at the forefront. Nisga’a Nation has created a detailed energy and emissions baseline and advanced a Low-Carbon Transportation Plan that improves access to safe, reliable, and affordable travel across all four Nisga’a villages.
In housing, the Nation’s Healthy Homes Energy Retrofit Pilot is transforming homes, cutting emissions and energy costs while making residences more resilient to extreme weather, wildfire smoke, and cold snaps.
“In a remote northern context, where climate risks are magnified, the Nisga’a Nation’s leadership is both inspiring and transformative,” judges said. “Their example shows how Indigenous leadership, grounded in stewardship of the land, can deliver solutions that improve health, resilience, and climate outcomes for generations.”
The Climate & Energy Action Awards, presented by the Community Energy Association for more than 25 years, recognize BC municipalities, regional districts, and Indigenous communities leading the way in climate action, sustainability, and public engagement. This year, a record 29 nominations were received.
