A woman who became lost while mushroom picking in the Kitimat-Stikine region was found safe thanks to a coordinated search effort by Terrace Search and Rescue, the Stewart RCMP, and local family friends.
As darkness fell and concern grew, the woman made the critical decision to stay in one spot. That choice helped searchers locate her at around 2 AM—safe and unharmed. Her family expressed deep gratitude to the search teams for their professionalism, care, and swift response.
According to the family, she remained calm during the 12-hour wait, using yoga, pacing, and breathing exercises to stay warm and focused. They say she could have been found sooner and more comfortably had she carried basic items such as a flashlight, snacks, a sweater, or a phone.
They’re urging anyone heading into the wilderness—alone or in groups—to carry essential gear and always have a kit ready. The key takeaway: if you become lost, stay put. It significantly improves your chances of being found quickly.
Terrace Search and Rescue echoed the message, thanking the family for sharing their story and helping raise awareness about wilderness safety.
