Leadership from the Esk’etemc Nation is calling on School District 27 to take immediate, transparent steps to address systemic racism and discrimination in its schools.
An Indigenous delegation attended the SD27 Board of Education meeting on September 22nd, demanding accountability and inclusion in the district’s decision-making processes. Despite board members wearing orange shirts in recognition of Orange Shirt Day, Esk’etemc leaders voiced concern over ongoing issues and a lack of meaningful dialogue with Indigenous communities.
The visit comes nearly one year after the Union of BC Indian Chiefs passed a resolution calling for an investigation into bullying, racism, and harassment within the district. To date, no action plan or formal response has been issued.
Esk’etemc is requesting answers to eight specific questions, including who is advising the district’s climate and culture review, how TRC Calls to Action are being implemented, and how Indigenous students’ success will be tracked and supported.
The Board of Education says a written response will follow its next in-camera meeting on October 6th. Esk’etemc leaders say they remain hopeful but firm in their call for change and full participation in shaping the future of education in their territory.
