Northern Health and the First Nations Health Authority have issued a toxic drug alert for the Northern Health region, effective until October 7, 2025.
The alert follows the discovery of a purple paste, sold as “down,” which has tested positive for fentanyl, benzodiazepines, and medetomidine. This mixture has been linked to multiple overdose events.
Medetomidine is a non-opioid sedative that can cause prolonged sedation, dangerously low pulse, and an increased risk of fatal overdose. In many cases, multiple doses of naloxone are required—or it may not work at all.
Health officials urge people not to use alone. Use in the presence of someone who can help, or use tools like the free Lifeguard App or call NORS (1-888-688-6677) if you’re using alone.
Other safety tips include:
-
Carry naloxone
-
Use only a small amount first
-
Don’t mix drugs or combine with alcohol
-
Access local overdose prevention or drug checking services where available
If someone overdoses, call 9-1-1 immediately.
