The B.C. government is reviewing its permitting process for the natural-resource sector and is inviting residents to provide feedback on proposed changes related to water management. These reforms aim to speed up permit approvals, reduce application backlogs, and ensure that environmental standards and Indigenous rights are maintained.
As part of the review, a series of surveys have been launched to gather public perspectives on proposed changes. The feedback will cover a range of topics under the Water Sustainability Act, Riparian Areas Protection Act, and Forest Act, among others. Proposed changes include new exemptions for construction dewatering, stream restoration eligibility, and the strategic use of offset payments to support wetland conservation.
In total, 16 topics have been identified for potential reform. These proposals seek to streamline permitting, make it easier to access water for restoration projects, and improve wetland and stream management practices.
The government encourages all British Columbians to participate in this engagement process. Surveys are available through govTogetherBC, with closing dates ranging from October 17, 2025, to December 12, 2025. Feedback will be reviewed before any changes are made to the permitting processes.
